Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in many plants, though many people commonly associate them with cannabis because cannabis plants contain high concentrations of terpenes.

Terpenes chart

These aromatic compounds create the characteristic scent of many plants, such as cannabis, pine, lavender, smoke or “skunky” scent – as well as fresh orange and lemon peel. The fragrance or scent of most plants is due to a combination of terpenes. In nature, these terpenes create a fragrant experience and protect the plants from animal grazing or infectious germs.

Terpenes may also offer some health benefits to the human body. As regulations surrounding cannabis become less strict, scientists are carrying out more research into these possible benefits.

Beyond any health benefits – these terpenes are now considered compelling “savory” flavorings and ingredients’ flavor enhancers. Did you know that gin distillers have added spruce flavorings (terpenes) to vodka to make gin?

At El Hempe we have harnessed these unique botanical terpene compounds (scents, flavors, profiles) specifically to enhance the aromatic and flavor sensations of our mezcal and tequila spirits and beverages. We’ve taken specific terpene profiles from non-cannabis plants and through mass spectrometry matched those terpenes to two of the most popular cannabis strain (flavors) profiles; OG Kush and Durban Poison.

El Hempe is breaking new ground by combining the world of spirits with the world of cannabis!
